St. Louis, Mo., Sept. 20, 2012 – After taking time off from exercise over the long hot summer, some consumers may be ready to return to a more consistent workout routine. But claims about different types of athletic equipment can be confusing.
The Better Business Bureau (BBB) advises consumers to be skeptical of claims that seem too good to be true, especially those that promise results without much effort.
“Consumers often buy into products that promise quick results,” said Michelle L. Corey, president and CEO of the St. Louis BBB. “But first, they need to research claims and find a product that fits their lifestyle and is likely to bring positive results.”
The BBB offers these tips to consumers considering the purchase of athletic equipment:
- Avoid products that claim to focus on one certain area. Some products claim that they can burn off belly fat or tone legs. Be skeptical of these types of workout items. Experts advise that results can be achieved only with a consistent routine that works the whole body.
- Buy what you will use. While the “newest and trendiest” workout machine may seem like a necessity, if it is not practical for everyday use, it is probably not worth the investment. Make sure that buying decisions fit with your personal daily routines and help you reach the results you want.
- Read the fine print. Do the math before purchasing workout equipment. What do “three easy payments” really add up to? Pay attention to deadlines for cancellation when trying an item under a “free trial.” Watch out for hidden fees that may not be included in the cost like shipping and handling or restocking fees.
- Don’t be fooled by the fit models in the advertisements. The “satisfied” customer in the advertisement may be a result of using the product in conjunction with a good exercise routine and healthy eating habits. The “before” and “after” results may not be proof that the item works.
