Better Business Bureau is alerting consumers and businesses about a new phishing attack that resembles an e-mail confirmation claiming the recipient has filed a complaint with BBB about a business. The malicious e-mails first came to the attention of BBB on Thursday, October 15.

When an 85-year-old St. Ann, Mo., woman answered her phone recently, the voice on the other end said, “Grandma?” When she replied yes, he told her, “I’m in trouble. I’m in jail in Montreal. I was arrested because the guy I was traveling with had dope in his luggage. Grandma, I need you to wire me $5,129 for bail money. Once I get back to St. Louis I can return the bail money to you.”

Numerous area cable subscribers have said that St. Charles Broadband provided poor services, continued to bill them once services were cancelled and was extremely difficult to contact. The firm has used local addresses of 700 Fountain Lakes Blvd., St. Charles, Mo., and P.O. Box 547, O’Fallon, Mo.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has revoked the accreditation of two firms for violations of the BBB’s Accreditation Agreement.
The companies are: Badolato Development Group, LLC, 3023 Highway K, O’Fallon, Mo.; and Designer Floors, Inc., 1003 Dovergate, St. Louis, Mo.

Across the U.S., homeowners facing mortgage foreclosure are being scammed by foreclosure “rescue” companies promising to save their house but that only take their money. In light of this emerging trend, the Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that gloomy forecasts for the housing and financial markets means that increasingly more people could fall prey to mortgage foreclosure scams in the coming months and years.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, American consumers lose more than $40 billion a year to telemarketing fraud. Despite repeated warnings from Better Business Bureaus, consumers continue to fall for pitches to promote fraudulent sweepstakes and vacation packages. And, in light of the economic downturn it can be expected that telephone hucksters will zero in on consumers' financial vulnerabilities. Some of the latest telemarketing pitches include offers for credit card loss protection plans, international lotteries and advance fee loans.
